Meeting 4 of 2021 was held on 23 June.
We were joined by James Lowry, Queens College, City University of New York.
James shared an unpublished article he is working on for our discussion.
We discussed:
- Notions of sovereignty - state, community, archival
- Archival autonomy vs sovereignty
- Documents like the International Declaration on Archives and the Tandanya Declaration - are these useful in considering ideas of sovereignty?
- Conceptions of ownership when considering sovereignty
- Notions of individual rights vs collective rights
- Are words like "ownership" and "rights" too steeped in Western thought from the start?
- Rights frameworks vs relational frameworks - are they in opposition?
- Can participatory design bring together issues of rights and relationships?
- The need to shift the emphasis onto the moment of records creation - but also the need to re-engineer systems, processes etc.
- Opportunities to not make records and ideas of refusal
