Meeting 3 2021 (12 May)

Meeting 3 of 2021 was held on 12 May, 2.00 AEST, via zoom. 

We were joined by Kirsten Thorpe to discuss her recent article, "The dangers of libraries and archives for Indigenous Australian workers: Investigating the question of Indigenous cultural safety", IFLA Journal:

Issues discussed included:
  • What a holistic view of cultural safety might look like
  • How the term "cultural safety" is in some ways a simplistic term for a complex issue
  • How and why archives and libraries are cultural unsafe for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander workers
  • How much of the work of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander library and archives workers becomes invisible
  • What changes are needed to education and training to make archives and libraries safe for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders
